š A New Record For Zero-Carbon Electricity ā”
Affiliate Disclosure
Hey fellow impactful ninja ?
You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.
Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.
But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.
Why do we add these product links?
First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.
And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.
What do these affiliate links mean for you?
First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.
And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we wonāt receive any commission but weāll still be happy to have helped you.
What do these affiliate links mean for us?
When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).
And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.
What does this mean for me personally?
You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.
Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.
Stay impactful,
Happy Wednesday š
We all know that switching from fossil to renewable energy is crucial to lowering carbon emissions and ensuring a healthy planet for future generationsā¦
Although progress to date has been slow, there is some good news!
A recent report shows that 2023 was the best year yet for renewable energyāand experts predict continued growth in the future!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:
- The rise of zero-carbon electricity ā”

ā” Zero-Carbon Electricity Generation Hits Record High
1ļøā£ The big picture: In 2023, more than 40% of the worldās electricity was generated from zero-carbon sources, a significant milestone in the transition to cleaner energy, according to a report by BloombergNEF (BNEF). Renewable energy sources like wind and solar accounted for 17% of total electricity generation, while hydroelectric and nuclear power made up 24%. Solar and wind contributed over 90% of global energy capacity additions in 2023, global wind capacity surpassed one terawatt, and Brazil achieved 88% renewable power generation, the highest among G-20 economies. Mainland China also reached its 2030 target for wind and solar energy, six years ahead of schedule.
2ļøā£ Why is this good news: Zero-carbon energy is often referred to as clean energy, an energy substitute for fossil fuels derived from processes that release minute amounts of GHGs into our atmosphere. The Paris Agreement specifically notes the transition away from fossil fuels and towards clean energies as being a critical part of meeting their goal, which is to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius (C), preferably to 1.5C, compared to pre-industrial levels.
3ļøā£ What’s next: Although steady growth in zero-carbon energy is a positive sign, much faster expansion is necessary to align with global net-zero targets. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that advanced economies would need to reduce emissions by 80% by 2035 to stay on track. According to BNEF, the second half of 2024 will be critical for shaping the future investment landscape.

š¢ The Charles Darwin Foundation: Adopting a GalĆ”pagos Giant Tortoise as Part of The Most Impactful Advent Calendar
šš In case you missed it: We are currently creating The Most Impactful Advent Calendar for you, to provide an impactful alternative to the mainstream Advent calendars that mostly offer short-lived joy through unhealthy sweets or cheap toys!
š¤ And today, Iād like to introduce you to one of our charity partners that will do a good deed in your name: The Charles Darwin Foundation!
š«¶ The Charles Darwin Foundation helps protect wildlife on the GalĆ”pagos Islandsāincluding the GalĆ”pagos giant tortoisesāfrom invasive species, increased tourism levels, climate change, illegal fishing, and other human activities. To achieve this, they combine scientific research and conservation action, working with scientists from all over the world and the local community. All while spearheading various environmental education and community outreach initiatives to develop the next generation of environmental stewards in the islands.

š§± Lego accelerates their sustainability goals:
- Lego is making strides toward sustainability by replacing the fossil fuels used in its iconic plastic bricks with pricier renewable and recycled materials. Despite the increased costsāLego is paying up to 70% more for renewable resināCEO Neils Christiansen stated that the company will absorb the extra expense rather than pass it on to consumers.
- The Danish toy company announced that it is on track to meet its goal of producing more than half of its plastic from certified renewable resin by 2026, up from 30% in the first half of 2024.
- This move is part of Legoās broader plan to transition all of its products to renewable and recycled materials by 2032. With 90% of all plastic still made from virgin fossil fuels, Lego’s commitment to sustainability sets a strong example for the industry.
š°š· A climate victory for South Korean citizens:
- South Korea’s Constitutional Court has ordered the government to improve its carbon-cutting plans, marking a significant step for climate activism in East Asia. This is the first legal case in the region challenging national climate policies, which could set a critical precedent.
- The ruling mandates that the government create more detailed plans for reducing emissions between 2031 and 2049 to meet its climate goals for 2049. The plaintiffs argued that the government’s current goals of cutting emissions by 35% from 2018 levels by 2030 are inadequate and lack proper implementation strategies.Ā
- Experts believe that this ruling could inspire more climate litigation across East Asia, signaling a shift in the region’s approach to environmental justice. The South Korean government has until February 2026 to modify its carbon neutrality law to include more specific long-term plans.
š«š® Finland set to install worldās largest heat pump:
- Helsinki is set to build the world’s largest air-to-water heat pump, powered by renewable energy, as part of its efforts to decarbonize the city’s district heating system.Ā
- Commissioned by the Finnish energy company Helen Oy, the heat pump system includes two 50MW electric boilers and will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 26,000 tonnes per year. The system is capable of operating in temperatures as low as -20°C, making it well-suited for Finland’s cold climate.
- Helsinki’s ambitious plan aligns with a broader push in the European Union to reduce carbon emissions from heating and cooling buildings. This project is seen as a significant step in the energy transition, helping Helsinki move away from fossil fuels and towards more sustainable heating solutions.
