Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Friday 👋

Since the industrial age, fossil fuels have been a key enabler of economic development…

…and economic growth has been closely tied to a rise in greenhouse gas emissions through most of our modern economic history…

But did you know that there are a number of countries that “decoupled” their economic growth from their emissions?

Meaning that they managed to grow without adding more pollution!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • 49 countries decoupled their economic growth from their emissions 🌎
  • Helping girls rescued from trafficking 👧
  • How a zero-emission train could transform air quality 🚄
  • How scientists saved 300 birds from extinction 🔦
  • And more… 💚

🌎 How Decoupling Economic Growth From CO2 Emissions Is Possible

1️⃣ The big picture: A comprehensive study involving 164 countries over nearly two centuries (1822–2018) and found that as most countries get richer, they also pollute more. However, a number of high-income countries show signs of decoupling economic growth from emissions: 49 countries, mostly wealthy ones, managed to grow without adding more pollution. Yet, 115 countries did not.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The findings are mixed but crucial for policy development as some countries are showing it’s possible to break away from pollution as they grow. The study reveals that 49 countries, primarily in Europe and Oceania, have begun to break the link between economic growth and carbon emissions, offering hope and models for others. However, the vast majority of nations, especially in Africa, America, and Asia, continue to see economic growth tied to increased emissions. This nuanced understanding allows for targeted, region-specific interventions that could accelerate the global push toward sustainable growth.

3️⃣ What’s next: This study highlights the need for stronger climate policies worldwide. It underscores the urgency of adopting effective climate policies that can facilitate a genuine global decoupling of economic activity from CO2 emissions. For real progress, policies need to focus not only on reducing emissions but also on aiding less affluent countries in adopting sustainable practices without hindering their economic growth. To really make a difference, countries need to work together to create ways of growing economically without harming the planet.

👧 The Child Freedom Coalition: Helping Girls Rescued From Trafficking as Part of The Most Impactful Advent Calendar

🎄📅 In case you missed it: We are currently creating The Most Impactful Advent Calendar for you, to provide an impactful alternative to the mainstream Advent calendars that mostly offer short-lived joy through unhealthy sweets or cheap toys!

🤝 And today, I’d like to introduce you to one of our charity partners that will do a good deed in your name: the Child Freedom Coalition!

🫶 The Child Freedom Coalition was founded in 2013 to end child slavery in supply chains across South Asia. Over the last decade, they have supported the rescue of thousands of children. Beyond that, they provide these kids with long-term care and with what they need to become successful and independent adults who fight trafficking in their own communities!

📢 Three More Good News

🚄 How the first zero-emission train could transform air quality in California:

  • A hydrogen-powered and zero-emission train, called the Zero-Emission Multiple Unit (Zemu) train, will soon be operating on a small 9-mile route in San Bernardino, California.
  • This Zemu train is the first of its kind to run on hybrid hydrogen fuel cells and battery systems. By producing only water vapor as a byproduct, this train produces zero carbon emissions and is a greener alternative to public transportation. Especially in San Bernardino, where air quality and particle pollution is a major concern.
  • Although the route of this Zemu train is small, its introduction is a significant step towards building cleaner public transportation. This project could spark other zero-emission technology and reduce greenhouse gas emissions around the world.

🔦 How scientists saved 300 birds from extinction using microlights:

  • A bird species, once extinct in Central Europe, is successfully being reintroduced and taught how to migrate. Conservationists and scientists are working together to use microlight aircraft to guide northern bald ibis birds back to old migration routes.
  • The reintroduction of the northern bald ibis is a major conservation win. This approach of gaining the birds’ trust and guiding them with microlights has brought the population back from zero to almost 300 since the project began in 2002.
  • Today, scientists and conservationists are adapting to environmental changes from climate change and introducing other routes for the birds to take. These efforts could lead to a self-sustaining population by 2028. Additionally, this technique can be used for other threatened species that migrate and save other animals from extinction.

💊 How modified microbes could convert excess CO2 into useful medicines:

  • Scientists have genetically altered a microbe named Cupriavidus necator to absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into a vital organic compound for medicine called mevalonate.
  • Not only can this discovery help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it can also produce useful compounds that are crucial for pharmaceutical needs. To make this microbe more stable, they’ve been engineered into following their new genetic instructions to produce more mevalonate, and can potentially be scaled for industrial use.
  • Today, there is much potential for this research to inspire new ways of capturing or reducing CO2, whilst also producing other valuable compounds.
