Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Scientists have identified 10 new moth species and 7 new genera in Hawaiʻi, a discovery that deepens our understanding of the archipelago’s rich and still largely unexplored biodiversity.
📈 One key stat: One newly identified moth, Iliahia pahulu, is already considered critically endangered, surviving in a single stand of just 30 sandalwood trees on the island of Lānaʻi, highlighting how urgent conservation action is in Hawaiʻi.
💬 One key quote: “Hawaiʻi is a world-renowned laboratory for evolution,” said lead author Kyhl Austin of the University of Hawaiʻi, adding that identifying seven new genera shows these insects crossed thousands of miles of open ocean far more frequently than scientists ever imagined.

1️⃣ The big picture: Hawaiʻi is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, home to a vast number of species found nowhere else on the planet. A new study has now added 10 moth species and 7 new genera to that list, revealing just how much of the archipelago’s wildlife remains undocumented. Researchers combined century-old museum collections with field surveys, anatomical analysis, high-resolution imaging, and genetic testing to make these identifications. Among the finds is Paalua leleole, a species in which females appear unable to fly, and several moths named in honor of Hawaiian culture, including one named for a volcano goddess. Experts not involved in the study called it a major contribution, noting that many native insect groups in Hawaiʻi have not been studied in about 100 years.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Uncovering 7 new genera at once is exceptionally rare and signals that Hawaiʻi’s evolutionary history is even richer and more complex than scientists previously understood. Each newly described species adds to the scientific record, giving conservationists more complete knowledge of what needs protecting and where. Naming and formally describing these moths is a critical first step toward building conservation strategies for species that might otherwise disappear before anyone even knows they exist. Some of the new moths are linked to Hawaiian sandalwood trees, a culturally significant plant that conservation efforts are actively working to restore, meaning protecting one can benefit the other. Broader awareness of Hawaiʻi’s hidden biodiversity can help direct funding and policy attention toward one of the world’s most threatened island ecosystems.

3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers plan to continue surveying remote areas and museum collections to uncover more undescribed species before they vanish. Conservation efforts for critically endangered species like Iliahia pahulu will need to focus on protecting and expanding the tiny sandalwood stands they depend on. Broader ecological restoration of Hawaiian sandalwood forests could prove essential to the survival of multiple newly identified moth species.
