1️⃣ The big picture: Brazil holds more primate species than any other country on Earth, yet its vast road network kills nearly 9 million mammals every year. When a highway splits a forest, it isolates animal populations on either side, making them more vulnerable to inbreeding and local extinction. Biologist Fernanda Abra founded Projeto Reconecta to address this head-on by stringing rope canopy bridges between treetops above highways. Eight bridges installed near Alta Floresta in the Amazon recorded 15,000 safe crossings by arboreal animals over 15 months, with zero roadkill events documented. Brazil’s federal transport department has since adopted Reconecta’s design as the recommended national standard for highways.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: For the first time, critically endangered species like the Alta Floresta titi monkey, only described by science in 2019, have a safe way to move between fragmented forest patches. Reconnecting these populations protects genetic diversity and helps prevent the collapse of entire ecosystems, since fruit-eating primates are key seed dispersers that shape forest composition. Brazil’s official adoption of Reconecta’s rope bridge design means the solution can now scale across thousands of miles of road at relatively low cost. A national bill requiring wildlife crossings, warning signs, and speed-reduction measures has already passed Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, opening the door to systemic change. Expansion to Suriname and new regions within Brazil shows the model travels well beyond its origins.
3️⃣ What’s next: Reconecta is expanding to Suriname and to Lucas do Rio Verde, where 10 new bridges are planned. Abra is also targeting BR-262 through the Pantanal, a road that kills roughly 2,000 animals per year. A national wildlife road safety bill is awaiting a Senate vote in Brazil, which could make these protections a legal requirement nationwide.
