1️⃣ The big picture: PFAS, commonly known as forever chemicals, have built up in US agricultural soils for decades, largely due to the widespread use of biosolid fertilizers derived from municipal sewage sludge. These chemicals persist for thousands of years, accumulate in soil and waterways, and have been linked in studies to cancers, cardiovascular disease, fertility issues, and more. Cleaning up contaminated farmland with existing methods carries an estimated total cost of $8 trillion for the US alone, putting remediation out of reach for most farmers. A team of Yale scientists has now published a detailed new approach in PNAS that uses alkaline rock, PFAS-absorbing plants, and a heat treatment process called pyrolysis to pull the chemicals out of the soil at a drastically lower cost. Crucially, the method also improves soil health rather than stripping it away, as current excavation-based techniques do.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: At roughly $29,000 per hectare, the new method makes large-scale PFAS cleanup financially achievable for the first time, opening the door for farmers across the US and potentially worldwide to restore their land. Unlike existing approaches that destroy topsoil and release large amounts of carbon dioxide, this process actually improves soil health, leaving farmland in better condition after treatment. On top of that, national-scale adoption in the US could draw down an estimated 10.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere each year, adding a meaningful climate benefit. Small and organic farmers, who were disproportionately affected by PFAS contamination from biosolid fertilizers, stand to benefit the most from a method that is both affordable and restorative. Reducing PFAS in agricultural soils also lowers the risk of the chemicals entering the food chain through crops and waterways, protecting both human health and ecosystems.
3️⃣ What’s next: Further research is still needed to clarify what happens to PFAS during pyrolysis, with recent studies suggesting temperatures of at least 800 degrees Celsius may be required for effective breakdown. The team also needs to account carefully for greenhouse gas emissions from high-temperature processing and transportation as part of the carbon balance equation. Real-world field trials will be key to validating the modeled outcomes and moving toward large-scale adoption.
