Hey fellow impactful ninja ?
You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.
Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.
But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.
Why do we add these product links?
First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.
And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.
What do these affiliate links mean for you?
First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.
And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.
What do these affiliate links mean for us?
When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).
And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.
What does this mean for me personally?
You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.
Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.
Stay impactful,

Happy Wednesday 👋
What comes to your mind when you hear the word “bacteria”?
You might immediately think of disease… and you wouldn’t be alone!
But did you know that most bacteria are not only completely harmless, but rather beneficial?
From recycling nutrients to producing oxygen to boosting your immune system, bacteria play an important role in holding ecosystems (and our own human bodies) together.
And recently, scientists have discovered a new type of bacteria that could spark a whole new generation of eco-friendly electronics!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:
- The new type of bacteria that can generate electricity 🦠
- The new seal rehabilitation center in the Netherlands 🦭
- How smartwatches can track the impacts of extreme heat ⌚
- Discussion of the week: finding joy in low-waste living 💬
- And more… 💚

🦠 Scientists Discover a New Type of Bacteria That Can Generate Electricity
1️⃣ The big picture: In an exciting breakthrough in bioelectronics, scientists have discovered Candidatus Electrothrix yaqonensis, a new species of electricity-conducting bacteria, on a brackish beach in Oregon (US). What makes this species especially interesting is its high electrical conductivity, making it a potential candidate for future bioelectronics, biodegradable electronics, and biosensors. The presence of a nickel-centered metal complex inside its ridges acts like a biological wire, allowing efficient electron transport. The bacteria’s adaptation to fluctuating salinity, using different proteins for osmotic regulation, is another key feature, allowing it to thrive in brackish water.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: This new species’ high conductivity and adaptability make it a promising candidate for applications in bioelectronics, such as biodegradable electronic devices, biosensors, and environmental remediation. Its unique biological properties may also help address issues like heavy metal contamination and pollution in sedimentary environments.
3️⃣ What’s next: Further studies into its conductive fibers and sheath formation could unlock even more potential applications, possibly transforming how we think about materials for electronics and environmental remediation. And this discovery opens up exciting possibilities for merging biological systems with technological innovations.

📢 More Good News…
🚢 Unveiling the world’s largest electric ship:
- The world’s largest electric ship, the China Zorrilla, has officially set sail from Tasmania, marking a monumental step forward in clean energy maritime transport.
- Initially planned to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), a shift in strategy led to the creation of this groundbreaking battery-powered ship, boasting a massive 40 megawatt-hour Energy Storage System (ESS)—four times larger than any existing maritime battery system.
- The launch underscores the growing potential for large-scale, low-emission transport solutions to help reduce the maritime sector’s carbon footprint, which currently accounts for around 2% of global energy-related emissions.
🦭 The new seal rehabilitation center in the Netherlands:
- A new seal rescue facility, the World Heritage Centre (WEC), has opened in the northern Netherlands, replacing the older Pieterburen Seal Centre.
- The facility includes 12 intensive-care units, can care for up to 70 seals at a time, and cost over €40 million, funded by local governments and charities. Besides rescue operations, it also serves as an educational center, teaching the public about the nearby Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and vital seal habitat.
- The WEC treats around 200 seals annually, primarily pups orphaned or injured by human activity such as marine debris or vessel strikes, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild.
⌚ How smartwatches can track the impacts of extreme heat:
- To monitor and understand the effects of extreme heat on vulnerable populations, researchers are using smartwatches to track heart rate, pulse, sleep patterns, and conducting weekly blood pressure checks among residents of low-income neighborhoods in Ahmedabad, India.
- Ahmedabad has been struggling with rising temperatures, and the city saw nearly 1,300 excess deaths due to heat in 2010. The issue is expected to worsen with climate change, which could result in 370% more heat-related deaths globally.
- The research is part of a global project examining how heat affects vulnerable populations in cities across Burkina Faso, Niue, and the Sonoran Desert in Mexico. The ultimate goal is to develop scalable solutions to combat the growing heat crisis and adapt cities to increasing temperatures.
