Hey fellow impactful ninja ?
You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.
Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.
But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.
Why do we add these product links?
First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.
And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.
What do these affiliate links mean for you?
First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.
And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.
What do these affiliate links mean for us?
When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).
And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.
What does this mean for me personally?
You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.
Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.
Stay impactful,
Happy Wednesday 👋
Nuclear power has long been met with hesitation and skepticism over its use of radioactive materials…
But did you also know that nuclear power is one of our cleanest energy sources that helps prevent billions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually?
We’re talking specifically about nuclear fission, where energy is produced when atoms are split apart.
Years of technological and safety advancements have made nuclear power safer and more efficient…
And now a new report reveals that we are generating more nuclear power than ever before, and we don’t show signs of stopping anytime soon!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:
- Nuclear power’s significance continues to grow ☢️
- Enabling gardeners to start donating fresh produce 🍎
- EU announces first carbon capture and storage facility 🇪🇺
- Climeworks receives coveted AAA rating for direct air capture 🌬️
- And more… 💚

☢️ Nuclear Energy Becomes Our Second-Largest Clean Energy Source
1️⃣ The big picture: The World Nuclear Performance Report 2024 highlights the growing significance of nuclear power in global energy production. In 2023, nuclear power generation reached 2,602 terawatt-hours (TWh), a notable increase from 2,544 TWh in 2022, now accounting for 9% of the world’s electricity. This makes nuclear power the second-largest clean energy source after hydropower. Key data from the report include the increase in the average capacity factor of nuclear reactors to 81.5% in 2023, showcasing the reliability of nuclear energy. The report also revealed that global nuclear energy saw a balanced level of activity, with 5 reactors decommissioned and 5 new reactors connected to the grid.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Nuclear power’s environmental impact is often underscored, with reactors preventing 2.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. Nuclear power produces a fraction of the pollution and toxic chemicals that fossil fuels produce and has the second-lowest carbon footprint out of all fuel types. On a life-cycle basis, nuclear power emits 12 grams of CO2 equivalent per kWh of electricity produced.
3️⃣ What’s next: Despite a slight decrease in global nuclear capacity, the overall efficiency and importance of nuclear energy in decarbonization efforts are clear, positioning it as a key player in achieving global climate goals. Nuclear power is expected to continue to play a key role in the clean energy movement due to its low carbon footprint, minimal land use impact, high energy density, few waste products produced, and ever-evolving safety measures.

📢 More Good News…
🪱 How sounds can indicate soil health:
- Ecologists from Flinders University in Australia and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have captured the fascinating “rave”-like sounds of healthy soil using eco-acoustic technology.
- The study, published in the Journal of Applied Ecology on August 16, 2024, demonstrates that a richer diversity of sounds corresponds to greater biodiversity underground, which in turn indicates healthier soil.
- This innovative approach to monitoring soil biodiversity, known as “eco-acoustics,” is an emerging field that could revolutionize how scientists assess soil health. This research also provides a new way to listen to and understand the underground ecosystems where nearly 60% of Earth’s species live, offering hope for more effective conservation strategies.
🇪🇺 EU announces first carbon capture and storage facility:
- The EU’s first onshore carbon removal and storage facility will be developed in France through a partnership between carbon storage start-ups RepAir Carbon and C-Questra.
- The project has a target of removing 100,000 tons of CO2 annually by 2030, with potential scaling to megatons by 2035.
- The project is also part of a broader Mediterranean Carbon Capture and Storage (CSS) Strategic Plan, which involves France, Italy, and Greece, aiming to develop a commercial-scale CO2 storage hub in Southern Europe.
🌬️ Climeworks receives coveted AAA rating for direct air capture:
- Climeworks’ Project Orca, in Iceland, has earned the world’s first AAA rating for direct air capture (DAC) with carbon storage. The rating, given by BeZero Carbon, signifies that Project Orca is deemed the most likely to successfully remove and durably store one tonne of CO2, marking it as a leader in the field of engineered carbon removal.
- The AAA rating from BeZero Carbon reflects the project’s high standards of “additionality” (the necessity of carbon finance for the project’s viability), low risks of over-crediting and leakage (proper lifecycle emissions accounting), and strong non-permanence safeguards (the durability of CO2 storage for millennia).
- This recognition is expected to boost confidence in carbon markets, encouraging investment in DAC technology as a vital component in the fight against climate change.
