Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: A new AI-powered device in India successfully detects elephant calls and deters them from entering villages, reducing deadly human-elephant conflicts near Kaziranga National Park.
📈 One key stat: Early field trials show the device is 80% accurate in detecting elephant calls and 100% effective in deterring them, potentially saving many lives in a region where elephants killed 1,468 people between 2000-2023.
💬 One key quote: “Asian elephants are extremely diverse in their vocalizations,” says elephant behavioral ecologist Shermin de Silva from the University of California, San Diego, who has spent more than two decades studying elephants.

1️⃣ The big picture: Engineer-turned-conservationist Seema Lokhandwala has developed an innovative AI system that eavesdrops on elephant conversations to prevent deadly conflicts in India’s Assam state. The small, battery-operated device uses artificial intelligence to detect elephant calls in the wild and responds by playing threatening sounds like tiger roars or buzzing bees to drive the herds away from villages. With expanding farmlands, increasing human settlements, and climate-driven food shortages pushing elephants into villages, Assam has become a hotspot for human-elephant conflicts. This technology offers a promising solution to a problem that has claimed over 1,400 human lives and 1,200 elephant lives in the region since 2000.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: This AI innovation provides a cost-effective and practical solution to mitigate deadly human-elephant conflicts without harming the animals. The system respects elephant behavior by using their own communication patterns against them, making it more effective than traditional deterrents. Local communities and forest officials have embraced the technology, recognizing its potential to save both human and elephant lives. At just $570 per unit (dropping to $170 for simpler versions), the system is becoming accessible to communities that desperately need protection. Beyond elephants, the technology shows promise for adaptation to prevent conflicts with other wildlife species and even detect rhino poaching activities.

3️⃣ What’s next: Lokhandwala seeks additional funding to build more devices after the Assam Forest Department requested expanded deployment. The technology may soon be incorporated into India’s nationwide Project Elephant conservation initiative. Farmers from other countries have already expressed interest in adopting this solution, suggesting potential international expansion.
