1️⃣ The big picture: A new facility in Saddle Hills County, Alberta has become the first operational post-combustion carbon capture and storage system integrated with a gas turbine used for power generation. Built by carbon capture developer Entropy Inc, the project combines a 15 MW co-generation installation with fully integrated capture, transportation, and permanent CO2 storage. Across its 45 MW total capacity, the system targets CO2 removal rates above 90%, and engineers estimate the carbon intensity of its power output at just 84 kg/MWh. Expected to capture 192,000 metric tons of CO2 per year, the facility also supplies electricity to its parent company Advantage Energy under a 15-year power purchase agreement and exports surplus power to the Alberta grid. Real-time performance tracking runs through Entropy’s proprietary EntropyIQ system, with verified data expected to be published in the coming months.

With CO2 removal rates targeting above 90% and a carbon intensity of just 84 kg/MWh, this facility sets a new standard for low-carbon gas power. Capturing 192,000 metric tons of CO2 annually means real, permanent emissions reductions at a scale that matters for Canada’s decarbonization goals. Because the technology is highly scalable, as the Global CCS Institute noted, other gas power operators around the world can look to this project as a replicable model for delivering clean firm power alongside industrial carbon capture. Proving that this combination works commercially and technically opens a credible pathway for decarbonizing sectors that still depend on gas power, without sacrificing grid reliability.

3️⃣ What’s next: Entropy plans to publish verified performance data from the project in the coming months using its EntropyIQ real-time carbon tracking system. Meanwhile, the company continues to push for faster processing of Canada’s Federal Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Investment Tax Credit and Alberta’s ACCIP program, both of which have faced administrative delays. Resolving those funding bottlenecks is critical to sustaining investor confidence and attracting the capital needed to scale similar projects across Canada.
