Throughout 2024, the city focused on expanding greenery across six neighborhoods and the iconic Acropolis area, planting 5,000 trees and shrubs. The initiative includes creating the city’s first micro-forest, establishing new parks, and renovating historic hills. This effort aims to combat Athens’ severe urban heat island effect, as the city has historically recorded some of Europe’s highest temperatures at 48.0°C (118.4°F).

3️⃣ What’s next: Mayor Doukas plans to expand the initial goal of 5,000 trees to 25,000 by the end of his term. Work has already started on the Western Hills of the Acropolis, with €2 million secured from the Green Fund to support restoration efforts. GREEN ATHENS, a municipal company, continues collaborating with the Municipality’s Green Department to implement these ambitious plans.
