Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Friday 👋

We all know that pollution is bad for our environment and biodiversity…

And that if we reduce the amount of pollution in our environment, we’ll help the organisms there to thrive again.

Now, a study confirms that exactly this happens in our rivers!

Reducing the amount of metal pollutants like zinc and copper in rivers led to an increase in the aquatic biodiversity of organisms like macroinvertebrates.

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • How reduced pollution improves biodiversity 🌊
  • How green hydrogen could cut emissions by 95% 🏭
  • The solar shirt that powers devices on the go 👕
  • And more… 💚

🌊 How Reduced Metal Pollution Improves River Biodiversity by 50%

1️⃣ The big picture: A comprehensive study analyzing over 65,000 observations from nearly 1,500 sites in English rivers has shown a clear link between reduced metal pollution and increased biodiversity. As coal usage and heavy industry declined between 1989-2018, related river pollution also decreased, creating healthier environments for aquatic life. The research found that lower levels of metals like zinc and copper had the most significant positive impact on invertebrate species diversity. While improvements were substantial in the 1980s and 1990s decades, biodiversity gains have plateaued since 2000, indicating more work is still needed.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The study provides clear evidence that environmental cleanup efforts have tangible positive impacts on river ecosystems. Reduced metal pollution allows more species to thrive, creating healthier and more resilient waterways. This success story demonstrates how policy changes and industrial transitions can benefit nature. The findings also provide a roadmap for future conservation efforts by identifying specific pollutant thresholds that support biodiversity. This knowledge can help target cleanup efforts more effectively in other regions facing similar challenges.

3️⃣ What’s next: The UK’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs aims to reduce river lengths impacted by mine-related metal pollutants by 50% by 2038. More research is needed to understand how urban runoff continues to affect river pollution levels. The study authors recommend using their ‘bottom-up’ statistical analysis approach alongside traditional methods to identify priority chemicals for environmental protection efforts.

📢 Three More Good News

🏭 How Green Hydrogen Could Cut Emissions by 95% in Heavy Industries:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Green hydrogen shows strong potential in decarbonizing heavy industries like steel and ammonia production, offering a practical path to reducing industrial emissions while creating economic opportunities.
  • 📈 One key stat: Making green iron in Australia with hydrogen and shipping it to Europe could be significantly cheaper than exporting raw materials separately, while cutting emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional methods.
  • 💬 One key quote: “These setbacks show hydrogen isn’t the ultimate solution to all our energy needs, especially if we want to export it. But they don’t spell doom. Instead, they nudge us toward where hydrogen really shines: in heavy industry, right where it’s made.”

🖨️ New 3D Printing Technique Creates Ultra-Fine Fibers of 1.5 Microns:

  • 📰 The quick summary: New 3D printing technique achieves ultra-fine fibers of 1.5 microns in diameter by printing in gel, enabling the creation of nature-inspired materials for advanced applications.
  • 📈 One key stat: The new printing technique achieves an unprecedented resolution of 1.5 microns, which is small enough to replicate natural fibers like spider silk.
  • 💬 One key quote: “This research overcomes a long-standing limitation of 3D printing technology—printing soft materials with a diameter as small as one micron,” said Dr. Wonsik Eom, who focused on designing the solvent exchange process.

👕 How a Solar Shirt With 120 Cells Powers Devices On the Go:

  • 📰 The quick summary: A new Solar Shirt with 120 integrated solar cells turns everyday clothing into a mobile power source, enabling users to charge their devices on the go while staying comfortable and stylish.
  • 📈 One key stat: The Solar Shirt produces 1 watt of electricity in full sunlight – enough to charge smartphones and other portable devices in just a few hours.
  • 💬 One key quote: “Whether you are exploring, going to a festival, or just living your life, you have a constant source of charge at your disposal, and you will not have to worry about carrying around power banks or looking for a charging station.”

🤝 Important Awareness Events at a Glance

🗣️ February 21, International Mother Language Day

  • Around the world, more than 40% of people do not have access to education in a language they speak or understand.
  • The goal of this day is to promote multilingual education based on mother tongue or first language.

📐 February 22, Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day:

  • On this day, volunteers, educators, and other role models facilitate engineering activities to show girls how engineers change the world.
  • It is part of a movement to increase female representation in STEM.

🥤 February 23, Skip the Straw Day:

  • Americans use more than 500 million plastic straws each day. And since they don’t biodegrade, those straws create an ecological dilemma, especially in the ocean.
  • Organizations utilize this day to raise awareness of the dangers of single-use plastics and encourage people to consume their drinks straw-free.
