Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: New research reveals that Borneo’s rare heath forests are rapidly declining with only 3.7% under strict protection, highlighting the urgent need to safeguard these unique ecosystems rich in specialized biodiversity.
📈 One key stat: Heath forests in Kalimantan have shrunk by approximately 33% since 1996, from 24,750 square kilometers to just 16,586 square kilometers today, signaling an alarming loss of these unique habitats.
💬 One key quote: “Research into kerangas forest coverage in Kalimantan was inspired by our discovery of the Rungan forest landscape’s fascinating forest and exceptional conservation value,” Namrata Biligeri Anirudh, a Ph.D. ecologist from the University of Indonesia who is the paper’s lead author, told Mongabay.

1️⃣ The big picture: Researchers from Indonesia, the UK, and the US have mapped the rare lowland heath forests (kerangas) of Indonesian Borneo, revealing significant changes in their distribution and limited formal protection. The study identified these forests spanning 16,586 square kilometers across Kalimantan, suggesting a 33% loss since 1996. Despite their ecological importance, only 3.7% of these forests fall within strictly protected areas, leaving them vulnerable to threats from mining, logging, and plantation development. The researchers focused on Central Kalimantan’s Rungan-Kahayan landscape, documenting unique habitats rich in specialized biodiversity including Bornean conifers, pitcher plants, and orchids.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The comprehensive mapping provides an essential baseline for conservation efforts of these previously overlooked ecosystems. Social forestry schemes since 2016 have enabled some villages to manage heath forest patches, offering short-term protection through sustainable use of non-timber forest products. The research highlights the importance of these forests not just for biodiversity but also for their contribution to Indonesia’s climate change mitigation goals through carbon storage. The study’s recognition of the ecological and cultural value of kerangas forests challenges misconceptions about their worth, potentially shifting attitudes toward these unique landscapes that support highly specialized plant species found nowhere else.

3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers call for stronger policy recognition and legal protection frameworks specifically addressing lowland heath forests. More studies need to focus on these ecosystems to guide targeted conservation efforts. Alternative income sources must be developed for local communities to reduce destructive practices like artisanal gold mining that threaten these fragile habitats.
