1️⃣ The big picture: Australia has officially opened Myrtle, the world’s first fully integrated, multi-purpose carbon refinery, on Kooragang Island in Newcastle. Operated by clean technology company MCi Carbon, the facility took 15 years of research and development to bring to life. Using proprietary mineral carbonation technology, Myrtle converts industrial CO2 emissions and low-value waste materials like steel slag into high-quality construction products such as concrete, plasterboard, and paint. Carbon gets permanently locked into these products at the molecular level, cutting net emissions in hard-to-abate industrial sectors by up to 90%. Backed by over AUD $80 million in combined government and private funding, the facility is already running validation campaigns with global industry partners.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: For the first time, heavy industry has a working, at-scale model that turns CO2 from a costly liability into a valuable raw material for everyday construction products. Permanently locking carbon into concrete, plasterboard, and adhesives means emissions reductions are durable and measurable, not just theoretical. Heavy industry accounts for more than 30% of global emissions, so a proven technology that can cut sectoral emissions by up to 90% carries enormous climate significance. Because the facility can be adapted for on-site integration at existing plants or operate as a regional hub, it can scale across many different industrial contexts worldwide. With the carbon-embedded construction materials market potentially reaching $1 trillion a year by 2050, decarbonization becomes a genuine economic opportunity rather than a burden.
3️⃣ What’s next: MCi Carbon is currently running a validation campaign with global refractory leader RHI Magnesita, with a target of building a first-of-a-kind commercial plant in Austria by 2030. Myrtle will continue serving as a testing ground where global industry leaders can validate the platform against their own emissions profiles. As more partnerships are confirmed, the technology has strong potential to be deployed at industrial sites around the world.
