Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Monday 👋

Today is the day, when Earth Day, Earth Week, and Earth Month are all simultaneously happening 🌎

Do you already know how you will be celebrating it?

Just in case you are still unsure, I can only recommend you check out our partner Neighborhood Forest, who do a fantastic job of giving free trees to children every Earth Week!

Or to join in with chemists celebrating Earth Week, to learn more about the role that chemistry plays in your everyday life!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • How to get involved in Chemists Celebrate Earth Week 🧪
  • A new 3D printer to print sustainable materials 🖨️
  • How scientists can turn metal waste into usable green hydrogen 🧑‍🔬

🧪 Event of the Week: Chemists Celebrate Earth Week

👉 Did you know that this week is Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW)? This awareness event was established to celebrate the positive role that chemistry plays in the world, particularly the breakthroughs achieved to save our natural planet.

1️⃣ The big picture: Chemists Celebrate Earth Week was founded in 2003 by the American Chemical Society as a day-long event to compliment Earth Day and promote the work of chemists in sustainable developments. Chemists Celebrate Earth Day was changed to a week-long event in 2018. And today, the event is a popular community-based program celebrated across the US, bringing together technical divisions, student communities, schools, businesses, and individuals to communicate the positive role chemists play in the world.

2️⃣ Why is this important: Everything we understand today is the result of scientific research, including the current climate change crisis. Every year, we extract 55 billion tons of fossil energy, metals, minerals, and biomass from the Earth. As a result, 80% of the world’s forests and 27% of coral reefs have already been destroyed. At this current rate, we are using 50% more natural resources than the Earth can provide. Fortunately, breakthroughs in scientific research have led to the development of sustainable resources such as recyclable plastics, environmental monitoring tools, and phosphate-free detergents to help restore our natural planet

3️⃣ How can you get involved: You can get involved in Chemists Celebrate Earth Week by attending one of the many awareness events that take place across the US during the week. If there are no events in your area, consider setting up your own to raise funds and awareness of the scientific breakthroughs that have improved our lives and those still in development to save our planet. Alternatively, you can show your appreciation for the Earth by planting a tree or spreading awareness through your social media channels.

Below are our favorite charities that are especially relevant this awareness month:

📢 Three Good News

🖨️ A new 3D printer can figure out how to print with unknown materials:

  • Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a 3D printer that can determine the printing parameters of an unknown material, including emerging sustainable fabrics.
  • New sustainable materials are being developed all the time. However, it’s currently difficult to create them at scale because 3D printer settings need to be tediously adjusted for each material.
  • This new 3D printer could help engineers to solve this problem because it automatically adjusts its own settings in response to new materials or those with fluctuating properties.

🌲 The creation of new conservation areas to protect mangroves in Brazil:

  • The state of Pará has established two new conservation areas along the Amazon coastline, placing nearly all of its mangroves under federal protection.
  • The creation of the reserves is essential for guaranteeing food security for local communities, aiding carbon sequestering, and preserving biodiversity.
  • The environmental victory came after President Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva signed the decree placing an additional 74,700 hectares (84,600 acres) of mangrove ecosystems under protection.

🧑‍🔬 A team of scientists has found a way to transform metal waste into a sustainable hydrogen production catalyst:

  • Scientists from the University of Nottingham have found that the surface of swarf (a byproduct of metal manufacturing), is textured with nanoscale grooves that can split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
  • Hydrogen is a clean fuel that can be used to generate heat or power. However, most hydrogen production methods still rely on fossil fuels, which have a negative effect on our planet.
  • By spreading just 28 micrograms of platinum over 1 cm2 of swarf, the researchers were able to create an electrolyzer that operates with 100% efficiency, producing 0.5 liters of hydrogen per minute from one piece of swarf.

🤝 Three More Important Awareness Events

🌎 April 22, Earth Day:

  • On April 22, organizations around the world share a common goal: raise awareness for the health of our planet.
  • This day is utilized to educate the public about the toll humans are taking on the environment and encourage them to adopt more environmentally friendly habits.

👗 April 24, Fashion Revolution Day

  • Fashion Revolution Day was created in 2014 to commemorate the tragic collapse of a garment factory in Bangladesh that killed over 1,300 people.
  • On this day, organizations create social media campaigns and organize events to promote transparency in the fashion industry and put a stop to unethical production.

🫄 April 21-27, Infertility Awareness Week:

  • Globally, about 1 in 6 people struggle to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term. Yet, many people are unaware of the challenges that come with infertility and how to support those impacted.
  • During Infertility Awareness Week, organizations encourage men and women to share their infertility stories to raise awareness and broaden the support available to others with reproductive issues.
