Together, these features help balance two normally mismatched reaction speeds, oxygen reduction and water oxidation, enabling efficient hydrogen peroxide production under visible light. Encased in a sodium alginate hydrogel, the system also works under natural sunlight and can be recycled, making it practical for real-world applications. The study, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, was led by researchers at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics and Inner Mongolia University.

Broader success in this area could open pathways to sustainable chemical manufacturing and solar fuel production that work without fossil fuels.
