This achievement is largely driven by China’s massive solar expansion, which added more solar power in one year than the entire historical capacity of the United States. Despite this progress, the global community is still projected to fall 28% short of the international goal to triple clean energy capacity by 2030. China leads the clean energy transition with nearly 887 billion watts of solar capacity – enough to power around 110 million American homes for a year. While almost all new electricity capacity now comes from renewables, fossil fuels still account for 60% of global power generation.

Households can expect lower energy costs over time as solar and wind become increasingly affordable alternatives to fossil fuels. The clean energy sector creates substantial employment opportunities, with the solar industry alone supporting over 250,000 US workers. China’s dominance in solar manufacturing helps drive down global prices, making clean technology more accessible worldwide. Even as national policies vary in support, cities and states continue pushing forward with ambitious renewable targets, demonstrating commitment at local levels.
3️⃣ What’s next: Meeting international climate commitments requires doubling the current pace of renewable energy adoption from 500 gigawatts to about 1,000 gigawatts annually through 2030. Countries need to increase public funding for clean energy while reducing fossil fuel subsidies. Faster permitting processes and stronger grid infrastructure investments are essential to accelerate the transition.
