Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Friday 👋

Food is fundamental to human life and is also a cornerstone of many cultures, economies, and environmental sustainability…

…and like many things, climate change has impacted global food production on a level not seen before.

The good news is that scientists have made breakthroughs in genetically engineering food that can combat the effects of global warming!

It’s called climate-smart agriculture… and it might just be the future of food as we know it…

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • Engineering climate-resilient crops 🍅
  • The US accelerates its climate goals 🇺🇸
  • How trains can power electric vehicles 🚆
  • And more… 💚

🍅 How Scientists Are Genetically Engineering Climate Resilient Crops to Combat Climate Change

1️⃣ The big picture: Researchers from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences have used advanced gene-editing technology to engineer climate-smart crops (e.g., tomatoes and rice) designed to combat the effects of global warming. In field tests, this genetic alteration increased tomato yields by 14 to 47% under normal conditions and by 26 to 33% during heat stress, with the ability to prevent 56 to 100% of the crop losses caused by heat. Similarly, rice crops showed a 7 to 13% increase in yields under normal conditions and up to 25% under heat stress, reducing the loss due to high temperatures by 41%.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: These findings, recently published in the journal Cell, underscore the potential of genetic engineering to mitigate climate change’s impact on global agriculture. With average crop losses expected to rise by 3-13% due to a 2°C global temperature increase, innovations like this could play a critical role in achieving food security goals aligned with the Paris Agreement’s climate targets.

3️⃣ What’s next: This breakthrough in crop design holds promise for ensuring food security in a warming world, benefiting not only China but potentially agriculture worldwide. By boosting climate resilience and yield stability, these techniques pave the way for a new era of sustainable agriculture.

📢 More Good News…

🐝 How beehives can help humans and elephants coexist:

  • The innovative use of beehive fences to help humans and elephants coexist in Kenya is an inspiring example of a nature-based solution to wildlife conflict. Elephants instinctively avoid bees due to the potential harm they pose, and beehive fences deter elephants 86% of the time during peak crop-growing seasons, preventing potential crop destruction and human-elephant conflicts.
  • Farmers benefit not only from the protection the beehive fences provide but also from honey production. The wild African honey bees used in the fences contribute to vital pollination, enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting local ecosystems.
  • The beehive fence method offers a scalable, cost-effective solution to human-elephant conflict, and it is also an example of empowering local communities to manage wildlife interactions sustainably.

🇺🇸 The US updates its climate goals ahead of presidency change:

  • The United States has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 61% to 66% by 2035, building on previous climate efforts, with a longer-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
  • This pledge, made by the outgoing Biden administration, is part of the country’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement.
  • To help safeguard climate progress, the United States Climate Alliance, a group of state governors, has set its own complementary emissions reduction goal of 60% by 2035.

🚆 How trains are powering electric vehicles in Spain:

  • Barcelona’s metro system is helping to power the city’s electric vehicles (EVs) using energy generated from the trains’ regenerative braking system.
  • This innovative project, known as MetroCharge, captures the energy produced when the trains slow down and transforms it into electricity. This energy is used to power the subway stations, with excess energy sent through cables to street-level EV charging points.
  • The program not only benefits the metro but also encourages the adoption of electric vehicles by making charging infrastructure more accessible.

📜 These Days in History

🫱🏾‍🫲🏽 January 1, 1863: US President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, abolishing the institution of slavery. Although a major step towards the end of slavery in the US, the order left many loopholes that abolitionists would continue to fight for years to come.

⚰️ January 3, 1924: After discovering King Tut’s tomb two years earlier, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his crew uncovered the stone sarcophagus containing the king’s solid gold coffin and mummy. The tomb and its contents had been preserved for over 3,000 years.
