Hey fellow impactful ninja ?
You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.
Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.
But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.
Why do we add these product links?
First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.
And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.
What do these affiliate links mean for you?
First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.
And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.
What do these affiliate links mean for us?
When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).
And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.
What does this mean for me personally?
You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.
Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.
Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Local conservationists in northern Myanmar have confirmed that the critically endangered white-bellied heron still survives in Kachin state, proving that community-led efforts can keep vital conservation work alive even in conflict-affected regions.
📈 One key stat: Only 50 to 249 adult white-bellied herons are estimated to exist globally, making every confirmed sighting in Myanmar extremely valuable for understanding and protecting the species.
💬 One key quote: “Every individual is important for the species to persist,” said Rohan Menzies, an ornithologist at the Nature Conservation Foundation in India.

1️⃣ The big picture: With as few as 50 mature individuals left in the world, the white-bellied heron ranks among the most threatened bird species on the planet, confined to a handful of undisturbed river valleys in Bhutan, northeastern India, and northern Myanmar. Since Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, conservation efforts in the country have faced severe setbacks, with large NGOs scaling back or leaving and government environmental oversight nearly disappearing. To fill that gap, WWF-Myanmar launched a small grants program supporting locally led conservation initiatives, one of which focused on surveying white-bellied herons in Kachin state. Northern Wildlife Rangers, a local civil society group, conducted community-based surveys between 2022 and 2023, documenting three to five individual herons across 25 sightings. Their findings, published in the journal Oryx, reaffirm northern Myanmar’s importance as one of the last remaining strongholds for this critically endangered species.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Confirming that white-bellied herons still persist in northern Myanmar is a significant relief for conservationists, as the country holds one of the last known populations of a species teetering on the edge of extinction. Local communities proved they can carry out rigorous scientific surveys without the support of large international organizations, offering a replicable model for conservation in other conflict-affected regions. Filling the data gap from Myanmar is especially critical because, as experts note, speculation about such small populations can be dangerous and lead to poor conservation decisions. Beyond the herons, the WWF small grants program has sustained research on more than two dozen other threatened species, showing that grassroots conservation can maintain momentum even under extreme political pressure. Empowering local communities to lead conservation builds long-term stewardship that can outlast political crises and remain resilient when outside support disappears.
3️⃣ What’s next: Northern Wildlife Rangers plan to expand surveys into other parts of northern Myanmar and potentially into Nagaland, India, to locate additional heron habitats and populations. Community education programs are being rolled out to raise awareness about the heron’s extreme rarity and reduce opportunistic hunting with homemade air guns. Conservationists are also calling for stronger networking and sustained technical and financial support for local groups to ensure these efforts continue beyond the short term.
