DAY 21

You’ve Provided a Child Living in Poverty in the US with Food, Clothing, and an Education

Together with Children Incorporated

🤝

What is your positive impact today?

Today, you’ve provided a child living in poverty in the US with food, clothing, and an education for one day. Thanks to your symbolic sponsorship, one child receives basic and education-related necessities such as food, clothing, healthcare, school supplies, and tuition payments for today. This vital support considers the needs of each sponsored child on an individual basis and allows children living in poverty to develop to their full potential—physically, emotionally, and socially. The child you supported today is based in the US, which includes inner cities and rural areas as well as the Navajo Nation.

💚

Why is your impact important?

Children living in poverty are at risk of not receiving an education because they suffer from hunger, lack access to healthcare, or don’t have proper clothes—all of which are preventable. According to UNICEF, child poverty is when a child is living within a household in which the family’s economic resources are below the threshold of what is required to meet their basic needs such as food, clothing, housing, and hygiene items. And today, about 385 million children around the world live in poverty.

Poverty has detrimental effects on children that can last a lifetime. 11.6 million children in the US today are living in low-income households. In 2022, 16.3% of children under the age of 18 was living in poverty and 17.3% of households with children were food insecure. Children living in poverty have a higher rate of absenteeism or leave school altogether because they are more likely to have to work or care for family members. And students who come from low-income families are 7 times more likely to drop out of school than those from families with higher incomes.
