A new study conducted between 2021 and 2024 used 188 camera-trap stations to record the animal more than 400 times and map its full distribution. Researchers discovered a previously unknown population in the Nuluhon-Trusmadi Forest Reserve, expanding the species’ known range. Habitat modeling confirmed, however, that the animal lives only within the greater Kinabalu-Crocker-Trusmadi mountain landscape. The research team now proposes renaming it the Kinabalu ferret badger to better reflect its unique status and strengthen public connection to the species.
