Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: European countries removed a record 542 river barriers in 2024, freeing up waterways for wildlife migration and restoring natural river flows across the continent.
📈 One key stat: 542 river barriers were dismantled across Europe in 2024, an 11 percent increase from the previous year, helping to restore natural river flows and support migratory fish populations.
💬 One key quote: “Healthy, free-flowing rivers are central to adapting to the climate crisis and boosting biodiversity, but Europe’s rivers are the most fragmented in the world.”

1️⃣ The big picture: Europe achieved a record-breaking year for river restoration by removing 542 dams, culverts, weirs, and sluices in 2024, representing an 11 percent increase from the previous year. Twenty-three European countries participated, with Finland, France, and Spain leading the effort by removing the highest number of barriers. This restoration push coincides with the European Union’s Nature Restoration Regulation that came into force in August 2024, which legally requires the restoration of at least 25,000 km of rivers to a free-flowing state by 2030. The removal of these barriers is critical as Europe’s waterways are considered the most fragmented in the world, with over 1.2 million obstacles blocking natural river flow.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Rivers across Europe can now return to their natural states, supporting migratory fish and wildlife that depend on uninterrupted waterways. Free-flowing rivers create healthier habitats for numerous species, including endangered ones like the pearl mussel, and iconic animals such as otters. These restoration efforts also help reduce erosion and build resilience against floods as rivers regain their natural dynamics. The initiative marks a significant shift in how governments and communities recognize the benefits of connected river systems, with four countries – Croatia, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Czech Republic – participating in barrier removal for the first time.

3️⃣ What’s next: European nations must continue scaling up the removal of obsolete dams that block rivers to meet the EU’s goal of restoring 25,000 kilometers of free-flowing rivers by 2030. Countries need to develop better tracking systems, as researchers noted the actual number of removals is likely higher than reported due to lack of centralized databases. Projects like the Torne River restoration between Finland and Sweden will continue, ultimately benefiting approximately 100 kilometers of waterways and over 6,100 acres of wetlands.
