Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Friday 👋

Did you know the UN just crowned five new climate heroes?

From youth activists to architects and forest defenders, this year’s Champions of the Earth are proving that bold ideas can drive real change…

And their work shows that climate leadership doesn’t just come from governments, it comes from all of us!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • The five climate innovators that win the UN’s highest environmental honor 🏅
  • The “protein switch” that could create self-fertilizing crops 🌾

🏅 Five Climate Innovators Win UN’s Highest Environmental Honor

1️⃣ The big picture: The United Nations Environment Programme has announced its five Champions of the Earth for 2025, honoring outstanding environmental leaders and innovators. The recipients include a youth-led organization that secured a historic climate justice ruling, an Indian forest official working on climate resilience, a Nigerian architect designing climate-adapted buildings, a Brazilian research institute fighting deforestation, and a posthumous recognition for work on methane emissions. The Champions of the Earth award represents the UN’s highest environmental honor, celebrating exceptional contributions that transform the environment for the better in four different categories.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: These awards spotlight diverse, effective approaches to climate action happening across the globe. From youth-led legal advocacy to innovative architecture and AI-powered deforestation monitoring, the honorees demonstrate practical solutions that are already making measurable differences. Their work spans critical areas from climate justice and ecosystem restoration to sustainable building design and methane reduction. By recognizing these champions, the UN helps amplify successful models that can be adopted elsewhere, inspiring others to take action while highlighting the importance of local knowledge and diverse perspectives in addressing our global climate crisis.

3️⃣ What’s next: The honored champions will likely expand their impactful initiatives using this international recognition to gain additional support and resources. Their innovative approaches can now serve as models for similar efforts worldwide, potentially influencing policy changes and inspiring new environmental advocates. UNEP will continue promoting urgent action on climate priorities like methane reduction, honoring the legacy of posthumously recognized champion Manfredi Caltagirone.

📢 Three More Good News

Iron-Air Batteries Connect to Power Grid, Offering 100+ Hour Energy Storage:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Iron-air batteries have connected to a public power grid for the first time, offering a sustainable solution that can store renewable energy for over 100 hours at a fraction of the cost of lithium batteries.
  • 📈 One key stat: Iron-air batteries can store power for over 100 hours, dramatically outperforming lithium batteries that lose their charge after just 4-6 hours.
  • 💬 One key quote: “This breakthrough could change how we store renewable energy from solar panels and wind farms.”

🌾 Scientists Discover Protein Switch That Could Create Self-Fertilizing Crops:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Scientists have discovered that modifying just two amino acids in a plant’s root receptor can enable crops to partner with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, potentially reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers.
  • 📈 One key stat: Synthetic fertilizer currently represents about two percent of global energy consumption and produces significant CO2 emissions.
  • 💬 One key quote: “We have shown that two small changes can cause plants to alter their behavior on a crucial point — from rejecting bacteria to cooperating with them,” Radutoiu explains.

🏗️ New Carbon-Negative Building Material Captures CO2 While Replacing Concrete:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute developed a carbon-negative construction material that captures 6 kg of CO2 per cubic meter, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional concrete.
  • 📈 One key stat: Producing a single cubic meter of this new enzymatic structural material sequesters more than 6 kilograms of CO2, compared to the 330 kilograms emitted by conventional concrete.
  • 💬 One key quote: “What our team has developed is a practical, scalable alternative that doesn’t just reduce emissions—it actually captures carbon,” stated Professor Rahbar.

📜 These Days in History

🇺🇲 December 12, 1870: Joseph Hayne Rainey filled a seat in the House of Representatives, becoming the first African American to do so. This was a major trailblazing moment for African Americans, especially as it was only five years after abolition.

💫 December 13, 1934: Nova Herculis was discovered by an amateur British astronomer named J.P.M. Prentice. It was found to be one of the brightest novas of the twentieth century.

This happened because of the work of the suffragists who had been protesting for the right to vote for decades, and began a cascade that saw women gaining the right to vote all over the world.
