1️⃣ The big picture: Artificial intelligence is driving a massive surge in computing demand, and the data centers powering it consume enormous amounts of electricity and fresh water, often sparking fierce opposition from nearby communities. A San Francisco startup called Aikido Technologies is proposing a radically different approach: floating offshore wind turbines with full AI data centers installed inside their hollow steel legs. Cold seawater passively cools the servers through the submerged walls, nearly eliminating the need for cooling towers, aquifers, or fresh water. Each platform pairs a turbine of 15 to 18 megawatts with 10 to 12 megawatts of high-end computing and an onboard battery. A small proof of concept unit is already scheduled for deployment off Norway by the end of 2026.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Placing data centers inside offshore wind turbines tackles two of the biggest problems in modern computing at once, by pairing renewable energy directly with servers and removing the need for massive land-based infrastructure. Passive seawater cooling is so efficient that the platform is expected to waste almost no energy on temperature control, compared to land-based cooling systems that can consume up to a third of a data center’s entire power bill. Fresh water use drops to nearly zero, relieving pressure on communities and regions already strained by drought. Because the platform sits far offshore, it sidesteps the neighborhood opposition that so often delays or blocks new data center projects on land. Scaling this concept could allow AI infrastructure to grow alongside offshore wind capacity, using the ocean as free, ready-made cooling and power infrastructure.
3️⃣ What’s next: Aikido’s first proof of concept, a 100 kilowatt unit built around a refurbished turbine, is set to go into the North Sea off Norway before the end of 2026. After that, the company is targeting a full commercial project in the UK with an operational date of 2028. Aikido has joined an NVIDIA startup program and reports that GPU customers are already showing interest in the platform.
