Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Monday 👋

🐕 Event of the Week: National Pet Week

👉 Did you know that this week is National Pet Week? This awareness event was established to celebrate the pets that enrich our lives and promote responsible pet care.

1️⃣ The big picture: National Pet Week was founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA to encourage pet owners to provide their companions with everything they need to have happy, healthy lives. Each day of the awareness week has a different theme organized by AVMA’s member veterinarians to improve knowledge surrounding pet care:

Sunday: Choose well

Monday: Behavioral health

Tuesday: Nutrition and exercise

Wednesday: Love your pet? See your vet!

Thursday: Travel with care

Friday: Preparing for emergencies

Saturday: Give them a lifetime of love

2️⃣ Why is this important: 66% of people in the US own a pet, equating to 86.9 million homes. However, not all owners fully understand the unique needs of their beloved companions, potentially leading to unnecessary suffering. For example, 75% of reptiles die within their first year of being a pet and 6.5 million pet animals enter US shelters every year. Even more concerning, 1,920 animal abuse cases are reported annually in the US alone, with 60% of those involving dogs.

3️⃣ How can you get involved: There are many ways you can get involved in National Pet Week. Perhaps the simplest way is to dote on your own pet and ensure all their needs are catered for. You can also get involved by setting up a fundraising event, either in person or virtually, to raise money for your local animal shelter or you can even consider volunteering.

Below are our favorite charities that are especially relevant this awareness month:

📢 Three Good News

✈️ How researchers have developed a way to turn methane emissions into sustainable jet fuel:

  • In a world first, researchers from the University of Sydney have developed a chemical process using plasma to create sustainable jet fuel from methane gas emitted from landfills.
  • The concentration of methane in the atmosphere is currently over two times the pre-industrial level and still rising, with waste emissions and the burning of fossil fuels contributing a significant amount.
  • Aviation accounts for 3% of the world’s emissions. So, by recycling current emissions, the researchers hope to create a more sustainable industry.

🐢 Bangladesh sees highest number of olive ridley turtle eggs in 4 years:

  • Nature Conservation Management (NACOM) found 12,425 eggs in 5 olive ridley turtle hatcheries across Southeast Bangladesh in April 2024. This is a 53% increase compared to the previous year.
  • The olive ridley turtle is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, with just 5,000 eggs recorded in 2020.
  • The key reasons behind the recent success are an increase in conservation efforts across beaches and a program to build awareness among local communities.

📡 A team of researchers use satellite imagery to boost mangrove conservation efforts in China:

  • Researchers have employed the use of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery to map the distribution of the mangrove species Kandelia obovata in China, significantly improving conservation efforts.
  • Mangroves are vital ecosystems along coastlines because they protect biodiversity and sequester carbon. However, conservation efforts have historically been challenging due to their remote locations.
  • The research study introduces a dual-temporal imaging strategy to capture the mangroves when they are most easily differentiated from other species. This has improved accurate identification to 88.5%.

🤝 Three More Important Awareness Events

💛 May 6, Melanoma Monday:

  • On April 22, organizations around the world share a common goal: raise awareness for the health of our planet.
  • This day is utilized to educate the public about the toll humans are taking on the environment and encourage them to adopt more environmentally friendly habits.

🧑‍🏫 May 7, National Teacher’s Day

  • National Teacher’s Day is a day for appreciating teachers all over the US.
  • With many funding difficulties facing teachers all over the US education system, they need our support to thrive.

🐶 May 5-11, Puppy Mill Action Week:

  • Puppy Mill Action Week raises awareness of the inhumane practices that occur in puppy mills.
  • These businesses are extremely harmful to dogs and unfortunately represent a large portion of the pet industry.
