Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Scientists have identified a genetic switch in wheat that allows each plant to produce three grains where ordinary wheat produces just one, potentially revolutionizing global food production without requiring additional land or resources.
📈 One key stat: Activating a normally dormant gene in wheat enables the plant to form three grains per flower instead of one, potentially tripling yields from the same amount of farmland to help feed billions more people.
💬 One key quote: “Pinpointing the genetic basis of this trait offers a path for breeders to incorporate it into new wheat varieties, potentially increasing the number of grains per spike and overall yield,” said Vijay Tiwari, Associate Professor of Plant Sciences and co-author of the study.

1️⃣ The big picture: Researchers at the University of Maryland have made a breakthrough in wheat genetics by identifying the gene responsible for a rare variety that can produce triple the normal number of grains. By mapping the DNA of this mutant wheat, they discovered that a normally inactive gene called WUSCHEL-D1 (WUS-D1) becomes active early in flower development. This activation enlarges the floral tissue and enables the plant to form additional ovaries, with each ovary capable of developing into a grain. The discovery offers a genetic pathway to significantly boost wheat yields without needing more farmland, water, or fertilizer.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: This genetic discovery creates a pathway to increase food production without expanding agricultural land use, addressing one of humanity’s most pressing challenges. Plant breeders can now work to incorporate this trait into commercial wheat varieties, potentially helping feed billions more people as global populations grow. The multi-ovary trait requires no additional resources like water or fertilizer yet could dramatically increase yields per acre. Beyond wheat, this genetic knowledge might be applied to other important grain crops, creating a multiplier effect across the global food system and helping agriculture adapt to climate change challenges.

3️⃣ What’s next: Plant breeders must now work to incorporate this genetic trait into commercial wheat varieties while ensuring other desirable characteristics are maintained. Scientists will explore using gene editing tools to activate the WUSCHEL-D1 gene in existing high-performing wheat varieties. Research will expand to determine if similar genetic mechanisms could boost grain production in other staple crops like rice or corn.
