When was this event established: Global Recycling Day was founded in 2018 by the President of the Bureau for International Recycling (BIR), Ranjit Baxi, as a recycling initiative that encourages us to see our trash as an opportunity to save the planet.
How has it developed since then: Today, Global Recycling Day is used to help recognize and celebrate the important role recycling plays in preserving precious natural resources and protecting the diversity of our planet. During Global Recycling Day, businesses and nonprofits also provide plenty of opportunities for people to participate in clean-up and recycling efforts.

- Legislative Changes: Since Global Recycling Day was launched, a lot of progress has been made to cut down on plastic waste. For example, numerous countries and states, including Jamaica and the UK, have now banned plastic straws, bags, and other single-use plastic items.
- Raising Awareness: The very first Global Recycling Day garnered support from more than 13 million people around the globe, creating more than 300,000 local jobs in the EU alone.
