Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Researchers at the University of Minnesota-Duluth have identified 575 GW of potential wave energy in the Great Lakes, representing nearly half of US electricity needs and creating a new frontier for renewable energy testing.
📈 One key stat: The Great Lakes contain approximately 575 GW of potential wave energy, which could generate about half of the electricity required by the entire United States.
💬 One key quote: “Due to the big storms that often happen, the research team has been successful at collecting wave data through a network of buoys and computer modeling.”

1️⃣ The big picture: Engineers at the University of Minnesota-Duluth have discovered significant untapped potential in Great Lakes wave energy, with an estimated 575 GW waiting to be harnessed. While solar and wind power have dominated renewable energy conversations, these researchers are shining light on wave energy as a viable alternative, particularly from freshwater sources. The team focuses on Lake Superior’s Minnesota shoreline, where average wavelengths of 2-3 meters indicate substantial energy potential. Despite challenges with consistency compared to ocean waves, the Great Lakes offer an ideal testing ground for wave energy technology with less corrosive freshwater environments and existing marine infrastructure.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The freshwater environment of the Great Lakes provides an excellent testing ground for wave energy technology with significantly less corrosion than saltwater settings. Lake Superior’s existing marine infrastructure in Duluth creates an optimal location for developing and testing prototypes of Wave Energy Converters. The research opens doors to diversifying our renewable energy portfolio beyond just wind and solar power. Large storms on the lakes generate substantial wave action that can be captured, and researchers have already proposed using pumped storage hydropower to convert intermittent wave energy into consistent electricity supply. This development creates opportunities for coastal communities worldwide to tap into previously overlooked energy sources.

3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers will continue developing Wave Energy Converters specifically designed for inland freshwater conditions. Testing will intensify during fall and winter storm seasons when wave energy potential peaks in Lake Superior. Though establishing commercial wave farms may take several years, various technologies are being evaluated to eventually tap into the 575 GW potential of the Great Lakes.
