Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Scientists discovered a vibrant ecosystem thriving beneath a recently calved Antarctic iceberg, revealing coral and sponge communities that have likely existed for centuries and providing unprecedented insights into hidden marine life.
📈 One key stat: The iceberg that calved from Antarctica’s George VI Ice Shelf measured about 510 square kilometers (209 square miles), roughly the size of Chicago, exposing seafloor that had been hidden under ice for centuries.
💬 One key quote: “We didn’t expect to find such a beautiful, thriving ecosystem. Based on the size of the animals, the communities we observed have been there for decades, maybe even hundreds of years,” said expedition co-chief scientist Dr. Patricia Esquete.

1️⃣ The big picture: An international team of scientists aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel quickly changed their expedition plans when a Chicago-sized iceberg broke off Antarctica’s George VI Ice Shelf in January 2025. Arriving just 12 days after the calving event, they became the first humans to explore the newly exposed seafloor beneath what had been a floating glacier. Using a remotely operated vehicle, the team discovered flourishing communities of large corals, sponges, and various marine animals that had been thriving in complete darkness. This unique opportunity provided the first in-depth study of geology, ocean conditions, and marine life in an area that had been sealed under ice for centuries.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The discovery of this vibrant ecosystem beneath Antarctic ice challenges previous assumptions about life in extreme environments. Researchers found large corals and sponges supporting diverse animal communities including icefish, giant sea spiders, and octopuses – some never before documented in this region. These findings offer valuable insights into how marine life adapts to survive in darkness without direct access to surface nutrients for potentially hundreds of years. The research also provides critical data on the historical behavior of the Antarctic ice sheet, helping scientists better understand climate change impacts and improve projections that can inform environmental policies.

3️⃣ What’s next: Scientists will continue analyzing the collected data and samples to identify potential new species discovered during the expedition. The team deployed underwater gliders to study the impacts of glacial meltwater on the region’s physical and chemical properties. Research findings will contribute to Challenger 150, a global cooperative focused on deep-sea biological research endorsed by UNESCO as part of the Ocean Decade Action.
