1️⃣ The big picture: For the first time ever, more than one-tenth of the world’s ocean is officially protected, a milestone confirmed by new data from the World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas in April 2026. More than 109 million square kilometers of ocean now fall within protected or conserved areas, representing 10.01% of the global marine environment. Over the past two years alone, approximately 5 million square kilometers were added, an area larger than the entire European Union. The milestone was announced by the IUCN and the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre, reflecting decades of coordinated conservation efforts. Marine protected areas help preserve critical habitats, support fisheries, protect endangered species, and strengthen the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and regulate the climate.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Reaching 10% ocean protection proves that large-scale, internationally coordinated conservation is achievable, even when the goal once seemed out of reach. Healthy, protected oceans absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and store heat, making marine conservation a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. Protected areas give coral reefs, seagrass meadows, mangroves, and deep-sea habitats a genuine chance to recover from overfishing, pollution, and warming waters. The rapid pace of recent expansion, with 5 million square kilometers added in just two years, shows that global political will for ocean protection is growing. This milestone also builds momentum for the 30×30 target, demonstrating that governments, Indigenous communities, scientists, and local stakeholders can align around shared conservation goals.
3️⃣ What’s next: Conservationists now focus on reaching the 30×30 target, which requires protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, meaning an additional area roughly the size of the Indian Ocean still needs protection. Expanding coverage of the high seas is a major priority, as only about 1.66% of those international waters currently fall within protected areas. Beyond expanding coverage, experts stress that protected areas must be effectively managed, adequately funded, and equitably governed to deliver real conservation benefits.
