1️⃣ The big picture: Galaxy cluster MACS J1141.6-1905, located about four billion light-years away in the constellation Crater, is so massive that its gravity bends and amplifies light from galaxies near the edge of the observable universe. Hubble captured this cluster by combining data from two separate observing programs, both focused on X-ray-bright clusters known for exceptional mass. The X-ray brightness signals enormous amounts of hot intracluster gas, which in turn confirms the cluster’s extraordinary mass. That mass makes it a powerful gravitational lens, a natural cosmic tool that magnifies faint, distant galaxies that Hubble could not otherwise detect. This new image now joins Hubble’s archive of 1.7 million observations, a growing scientific record built over 36 years of continuous operation.
