1️⃣ The big picture: Shipping accounts for a significant share of global emissions, and the vast majority of vessels currently in operation cannot easily switch to low-carbon fuels, leaving onboard carbon capture as one of the most practical near-term options. To address this gap, classification society DNV has published the first standardized framework, known as DNV-RP-0698, to measure and verify the performance of onboard carbon capture and storage systems. Built around mass balance principles, the framework defines key performance metrics including capture rates, quantities of captured CO2, remaining atmospheric emissions, and gross capture efficiency. Critically, it stays technology-neutral, meaning it works across pre-combustion, post-combustion, oxy-fuel, and alternative capture approaches. A structured third-party verification process also comes built into the framework, covering system documentation, measurement setup, performance calculations, and uncertainty assessments.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: For the first time, shipyards, manufacturers, and shipowners have a clear, shared technical language to evaluate and compare onboard carbon capture systems, making informed deployment decisions far easier. By covering the full performance picture rather than just raw capture volumes, the framework enables more trustworthy investment decisions and reduces financial risk early in the design phase. Because it is technology-neutral, it opens the door for a wide range of capture technologies to compete and improve, accelerating innovation across the sector. Long vessel lifespans mean that retrofitting existing ships with bolt-on solutions is one of the fastest ways to cut maritime emissions, and this standard gives those retrofit projects a credible, verifiable basis to move forward. Regulatory momentum from the International Maritime Organization further supports this progress, meaning the industry now has both a technical and a policy pathway developing in parallel.
3️⃣ What’s next: DNV’s framework sets the stage for wider adoption of onboard carbon capture across both newbuild and retrofit projects globally. The International Maritime Organization continues developing its own formal guidelines on onboard carbon capture, with completion targeted for 2028. As more vessels deploy these systems under a common standard, comparable performance data will accumulate, helping accelerate the broader scaling of maritime carbon capture.
