Researchers analyzed a half-mile stream corridor in northern Switzerland, where beavers have been active since 2010, and built a detailed carbon budget by measuring how carbon entered, moved through, and left the system. Over one year, the beaver-modified reach stored roughly 108 US tons of carbon, equal to 26% of all carbon flowing in. Crucially, more than half of that stored carbon was held underground in aquifer pathways beneath the streambed, a mechanism that most climate models had overlooked. Methane emissions, often a concern for wetlands, made up less than one-tenth of 1% of the carbon budget at this site, meaning the net climate benefit remained strongly positive.

As European beaver populations recover across countries including Spain, the potential scale of this carbon storage benefit grows alongside the species’ natural range expansion. Recognizing this function gives conservationists and climate planners a stronger, evidence-backed case for protecting and restoring beaver populations across suitable habitats.
3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers note that not every river system has the right geography for beaver-driven carbon storage, so identifying suitable corridors will be an important next step. In Spain and other countries where beavers are returning, planned and evidence-based reintroductions can help maximize climate benefits while managing potential conflicts with farmers and river managers. Wider adoption of this kind of whole-system carbon budgeting in rivers could also improve national and regional climate accounting going forward.
