Their key finding is that the geometry producing the most power does not always produce the most efficient or structurally safe design. A configuration that balanced all three factors reached a modeled peak of 460 watts. The research gives engineers a faster way to evaluate turbine designs before building expensive physical prototypes.

Progress toward kilowatt-scale bladeless systems could eventually extend this technology to offshore environments as well.
