Formed in 2018 through a partnership between Save Vietnam’s Wildlife and the park, the unit replaced handwritten patrol notes with SMART software and GPS-enabled smartphones to map snare locations and trafficking hotspots. Remote PoacherCams installed at forest entry points and hunter trails give rangers a clearer picture of who moves through the forest and why. Early results are encouraging: rangers are finding fewer snares, and rare species like clouded leopards and Owston’s civets have been documented in the landscape. The team is also expanding into community outreach to reduce demand for illegally sourced wildlife at the source.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Fewer snares are being found across the park, pointing to a real shift in poaching pressure rather than just improved detection. Signs of wildlife recovery are already visible, with wild pigs, otters, and pangolins returning to areas that were once heavily hunted. Independent camera surveys have confirmed the presence of rare and elusive species, including clouded leopards, showing that nature can rebound when given protection. By pairing technology with human judgment, rangers are making smarter decisions about where to patrol and how to allocate limited resources across vast, rugged terrain. Community outreach efforts add another layer of long-term protection by addressing the demand side of the illegal wildlife trade.
3️⃣ What’s next: The antipoaching unit plans to expand community outreach and launch a mobile nature center to reduce local demand for illegally sourced wildlife. Rangers are also exploring the use of artificial intelligence to help analyze images and sounds more quickly, while keeping humans at the center of decision-making. Continued investment in both technology and training will be key to scaling these results across more of the park.
