A new study by scientists at Tulane University in New Orleans, analyzing satellite data from 1984 to 2023, found that this trend began to reverse around 2010. Since then, mangrove expansion and regrowth have nearly outpaced losses, resulting in only about a cumulative 1% global decline since the 1980s. Recovery is uneven across regions, with Southeast Asia showing clear progress while West and Central Africa, particularly Nigeria’s Niger Delta, continue to experience accelerating losses.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Mangroves are proving far more resilient than scientists previously believed, naturally colonizing new mudflats, river deltas, and even abandoned aquaculture pools without intensive human intervention. The share of denser, closed-canopy mangrove forest has grown globally, meaning the forests that remain are healthier, storing more carbon and providing stronger coastal protection. Because mangroves hold a higher density of carbon than most other forest types, their recovery represents one of the most cost-effective nature-based strategies available for fighting climate change. A slowdown in deforestation rates, combined with legal protections and restoration efforts, shows that targeted policy and conservation action can deliver measurable results for ecosystems once thought to be in irreversible decline. This recovery also signals that, if deforestation continues to slow, mangroves have the natural capacity to keep bouncing back, reducing the need for costly large-scale replanting programs.

Regions like West and Central Africa, where losses are still accelerating, need urgent targeted protection.
