According to estimates, the biochar mix could reduce CO2 emissions from the top asphalt layer by up to 75 to 76%, depending on how the reduction is measured. Laboratory trials conducted with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya suggest the biochar-enriched asphalt performs equally or better than conventional mixes in terms of water resistance and durability. If real-world pilots scheduled for 2027 confirm these results, the approach could offer other European cities a practical model for lower-carbon road construction.

Early laboratory results show the biochar asphalt holds up just as well as, or better than, conventional mixes, so cities do not have to sacrifice road quality to reduce emissions. Because streets cover enormous surface areas in every urban center worldwide, even a modest improvement in pavement materials can add up to significant climate impact across cities. Barcelona’s pilot also opens a path for replicating this approach in other dense cities facing pressure to decarbonize their public infrastructure without overhauling entire construction industries.
3️⃣ What’s next: Applied research and prototype development are set to continue through September 2026, supported by a grant of around 90,000 euros. After that, the first real pilot sections using the biochar asphalt are expected to appear on actual Barcelona streets in 2027. City officials will then monitor performance under real traffic conditions to decide whether the material can scale to other neighborhoods or serve as a model for other European cities.
