1️⃣ The big picture: Finding space for both clean energy and food production is one of the central challenges facing densely populated countries today. In eastern China, near the town of Cixi, engineers answered that challenge by floating a 200-megawatt solar farm across 300 hectares of working fish ponds. The array, connected to the national grid in 2017, generates around 220 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year while the water beneath it continues to raise carp and shrimp for market. What surprised researchers was that the shade cast by the panels also improved conditions for the fish, lowering water temperatures and raising oxygen levels. That unexpected bonus turned a smart financial idea into a model now spreading across Asia and beyond.

The shade from the panels lowers water temperatures by around 1.5 degrees Celsius, and cooler water holds more oxygen, giving fish better conditions to grow. Studies found dissolved oxygen rising by up to 25% in these shaded ponds, and fewer algae blooms mean a healthier, more stable environment for the fish stock. Fish farms in other countries are already adopting the model to cut power bills and reduce reliance on diesel generators. Each new site adds data and experience that helps refine the approach, making it easier and more effective to replicate around the world.

Engineers still need to fine-tune panel spacing carefully, since too much shade can deprive a pond of the light it needs. As the model spreads beyond China, more countries running low on flat land may find their own reservoirs and fish farms are ready for the same pairing.
