1️⃣ The big picture: Every time solar electricity travels from a panel through an inverter to a battery and then to an appliance, small amounts of energy are lost at each conversion step. Researchers at Purdue University tested whether shortening that route in a real home could meaningfully reduce those losses. Working in a 1920th house in West Lafayette, Indiana, they connected solar panels, a battery, and a modified heat pump through a shared direct current system instead of the conventional alternating current path. Results showed that the more direct setup reduced annual nanogrid energy use by up to 9.2% and cut the modeled electricity bill by up to 16.7%. The heat pump itself performed about the same on both current types, meaning the savings came from cleaning up the electrical route, not from the device becoming more efficient.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Reducing energy waste without changing how people use their homes is a meaningful step toward more efficient residential energy systems. These findings suggest that the design of a home’s internal electrical network matters nearly as much as the solar panels or batteries installed in it. For new buildings especially, planning direct current circuits alongside standard alternating current ones from the start could deliver real savings with little added cost. As solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, and electric vehicles become standard in homes, designing smarter internal grids from the ground up means more of the clean energy you generate actually gets used. Supporting research from a field study in Cyprus, where a hybrid system pushed solar self-consumption above 85%, points in the same direction, adding confidence that this approach can work across different building types and climates.
3️⃣ What’s next: Purpose-built DC heat pumps and compatible household components still need to become widely available before this approach can scale. Common safety standards and reliable cost data for DC installations are also needed. New construction projects present the clearest near-term opportunity to put these findings into practice.
