1️⃣ The big picture: As traditional mountain glaciers across the western US shrink and vanish at accelerating rates, a lesser-known frozen feature is holding its ground. Rock glaciers, slow-moving masses of rock debris and ice found throughout ranges like the Tetons, the Wasatch, and the Colorado Rockies, are losing ice at a fraction of the rate of their icy counterparts. A thick layer of boulders and debris shields the ice beneath from warming temperatures, keeping it stable even as the climate shifts. New research comparing glacier types in Grand Teton National Park found that while icy glaciers thinned roughly seven times faster than in previous decades, rock glaciers stayed nearly unchanged. With at least 1,500 active rock glaciers across the western US, these formations are emerging as an underappreciated buffer against the worst effects of glacial loss.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Rock glaciers are providing a rare source of stability in a mountain water system under serious stress, continuing to release meltwater into streams during summer even as other ice sources dry up. Streams fed by rock glaciers warmed by only about 1.1 degrees Fahrenheit over the past decade, compared to 6.1 degrees for streams relying on seasonal snowpack, giving cold-water species a far better chance of survival. Endangered species like the meltwater stonefly, already threatened by the retreat of traditional glaciers, can also survive downstream of rock glaciers, offering a potential lifeline as their other habitats disappear. The natural insulating properties of debris-covered ice act like a built-in climate buffer, buying time for ecosystems and water managers to adapt. Identifying and protecting these areas now gives conservation planners a concrete, science-backed tool for preserving cold-water biodiversity through the end of the century.
3️⃣ What’s next: Scientists are working to map how much ice rock glaciers across the western US actually contain and how fast that ice is likely to melt under continued warming. Land and resource managers can use this research to identify which streams and ecosystems are most likely to remain viable and worth prioritizing for conservation. Even so, many rock glaciers face the risk of becoming ice-free by 2100 if current warming trends continue, making emissions reductions an essential parallel effort.
