Experts agree that combining green infrastructure with traditional engineering, like pumps, tunnels, and smarter drains, creates a much stronger defense than either approach alone. As cities plan for a future with more intense rainfall, sponge city design gives planners a proven, multi-benefit tool to build resilience into the urban fabric from the ground up.

3️⃣ What’s next: Cities need to move beyond scattered, neighborhood-level sponge projects and plan green infrastructure as connected, citywide systems. New developments can integrate water absorption from the start, while older neighborhoods need targeted retrofitting wherever possible. Experts stress that green infrastructure must be paired with engineering solutions and honest planning for the most extreme storms that current infrastructure was never designed to handle.
