1️⃣ The big picture: When an electric vehicle battery can no longer deliver the range a driver needs, it is far from useless. Moment Energy officially opened Megafactory 1 in Vancouver, British Columbia, on June 23rd, 2026, calling it the world’s largest EV battery repurposing facility. The plant takes retired EV batteries, tests and grades them, and transforms them into energy storage systems for data centers, hospitals, factories, and microgrids. According to UL Solutions, these batteries typically retain about 80% of their storage capacity at the end of their automotive life, making them well suited for stationary storage roles. The facility is expected to produce 1 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030 and supports over 1,000 indirect jobs across British Columbia.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: Giving EV batteries a second life means fewer batteries go straight to recycling, stretching the value of materials that took significant energy and resources to produce in the first place. Stationary storage systems can help stabilize power grids, reduce blackouts, and prevent renewable energy from going to waste when solar and wind generation exceeds immediate demand. The International Energy Agency estimates that global storage capacity needs to increase sixfold to 1,500 GW by 2030, and repurposed EV batteries can help fill that gap at lower cost than manufacturing new cells. Real-world results already back this up: at one off-grid resort in British Columbia, a second-life battery system cut diesel generator use by 66%, eliminating over 4,200 liters of diesel consumption per year. As millions of EV batteries approach retirement over the next decade, facilities like Megafactory 1 can convert what might otherwise become a waste crisis into a practical, scalable energy storage resource.
3️⃣ What’s next: Moment Energy plans to scale production toward 1 GWh of annual storage system output by 2030. As the supply of retired EV batteries grows alongside rising EV adoption, demand for repurposing facilities is expected to accelerate. The company’s UL 1974 certification also sets a safety standard that other operators in the second-life battery space may need to match to attract institutional and utility customers.
