Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Indonesia can meet its biofuel targets through community-based production using diverse feedstocks instead of expanding oil palm plantations, delivering higher economic benefits while eliminating environmental and social costs.
📈 One key stat: Community-based biofuel production could generate a net economic benefit of $37.1 billion compared to $31.36 billion under the business-as-usual scenario, showcasing the financial advantage of more sustainable approaches.
💬 One key quote: “We need rational thinking in this time of climate crisis,” Giorgio said. “We face multiple crises. This isn’t about being pessimistic — it’s about being sensible.

1️⃣ The big picture: Indonesia’s aggressive biofuel program requires increasing amounts of palm oil, with current mandates demanding 40% palm-based biodiesel (B40) and plans to reach 50% (B50) next year. Environmental NGO Madani Berkelanjutan has analyzed two potential paths forward: continuing palm plantation expansion or shifting to a community-based approach with diverse feedstocks. Their research shows the current strategy could require 4.72 million hectares of new plantations, causing up to $4.72 billion in environmental and social damage. Meanwhile, the alternative approach focuses on improving yields from existing plantations and empowering local communities to produce biofuels from various sources like used cooking oil and non-palm crops.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: A community-based approach eliminates the need for destructive expansion of oil palm plantations while still meeting Indonesia’s ambitious biofuel targets. Rural economies gain direct benefits estimated at $2 billion over ten years through village-owned enterprises and cooperatives producing biodiesel from local feedstocks. Diversification to alternatives like used cooking oil, rubber seeds, and nyamplung trees creates more resilient supply chains while preventing deforestation and carbon emissions. This strategy delivers a higher net economic benefit of $37.1 billion compared to $31.36 billion under business-as-usual, proving that environmental protection and economic growth can work together.

3️⃣ What’s next: Indonesia must enforce its ecological cap on palm oil plantations, as the current 17.3 million hectares approaches the maximum sustainable limit of 18.15 million hectares. Yield improvement initiatives need to target the 9 million hectares of aging plantations through replanting and improved agricultural practices. Village enterprises should be empowered to produce up to 10% of the national biodiesel supply using diverse, locally appropriate feedstocks.
