When was this event established: International Day of Charity was founded in 2011 by the Hungarian Civil Society with the support of the Hungarian parliament and government. September 5 was chosen to commemorate the death date of Mother Teresa who was the founder of the Missionaries of Charity.
How has it developed since then: In 2012, the United Nations agreed to support International Day of Charity. Since then, the event has grown in popularity. In 2014, a statue of Mother Teresa was unveiled in Budapest to mark the occasion. - Giving Statistics: The highest benefactor of charitable giving is religion, which receives 32% of the nation’s donations. Following up from that are education (16%), human services (12%), grantmaking foundations (11%), and health (9%).
