Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Keep reading to find all the important information about International Day of Education at a glance: its big picture, why it’s important, and how you can get involved. We’ll then share its brief history, three interesting facts about it, its future dates, and how you’ll never miss any important awareness event again.

The Most Important Information About International Day of Education at a Glance

1️⃣ The big picture: International Day of Education is a global observance dedicated to education and celebrating its role in bringing peace and sustainable development. It fights to overcome challenges against universal education by urging governments, communities, and organizations worldwide to protect education as a fundamental right. It also mobilizes global awareness activities, seminars, and workshops that inspire children to love learning and highlight the importance of securing quality education for all.

2️⃣ Why it is important: Lack of education, also called “learning poverty”, affects 244 million children around the world, who are out of school. In addition, 617 million youth cannot read and do basic math, while 763 million adults are illiterate. In sub-Saharan Africa, only 40% of girls complete secondary school and 30% of teachers are under-trained. This is because youth from low-income regions and those living in conflict-affected countries are twice as likely to be out of school. What’s worse, 130 million girls worldwide are denied the human right to education. As a result, the UN warned that, if nothing is done, over 800 million youth will leave school without the skills to get a job in 2030.

3️⃣ How you can get involved: You can celebrate International Day of Education by serving global efforts to improve education, setting up an awareness event in your area, or increasing knowledge of this cause on social media:

  1. Support worldwide efforts: Aid dedicated organizations that improve education equity worldwide by donating your time and/or money. You can also provide a direct contribution to the future of global education by joining them as an advocate or ambassador.
  2. Serve your community: Consider organizing an awareness event with education advocates in a local school or university. In this way, you can inspire local youth to learn and realize the importance of education and the value it brings to their lives.
  3. Spread awareness online: Highlight the challenges of the current education system on social media to catalyze support and action for global education. You can motivate people to donate to this cause, volunteer, and advocate to improve the state of education in their community.

A Brief History of International Day of Education

When was this event established: International Day of Education was established on December 3, 2018 by the United Nations General Assembly. They adopted a resolution proclaiming 24 January as International Day of Education to celebrate the role of education for peace and development. Through this event, they wanted to advance efforts towards their Sustainable Development Goal 4, which is Quality Education.

How has it developed since then: Today, International Day of Education is organized by UNESCO, the specialized UN agency for education, in collaboration with global education leaders. The UN also calls for all Member States, UN organizations, civil societies, academic institutions, and businesses to celebrate this event and do their part in ensuring equitable and effective education for the future. Each year, the event chooses an impactful theme, such as “Recover and Revitalize Education for the COVID-19 Generation” and “Learning for People, Planet, Prosperity, and Peace”.

3 Interesting Facts About International Day of Education

  1. Wars affect education: Conflict is one of the main reasons children cannot get an education, as half of all out-of-school youth are living in a conflict zone. For example, the Syria crisis erased all the country’s educational progress from the 21st century. Also, in 2023 alone, 19 million children in Sudan were out of school due to renewed conflict. However, education is a lifeline during conflicts and a critical element in reducing the chance of future warfare.
  2. Poverty and education: 40% of children living in poverty are underprepared for primary school and most of them lack the minimum conditions to learn at home. As a result, they have higher absenteeism or drop out of school because they have to work or care for family members. Yet, education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty: if all students in low-income countries had reading skills, 171 million people could escape poverty.
  3. A devastating pandemic: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on student learning was significant, leaving students in low- and middle-income countries way behind in mathematics, reading, and other subjects. Some estimates suggest that the pandemic caused around 70% of current youth to lack significant and fundamental education. For example, in the US, the pandemic erased 20 years of progress in math and reading.
