You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. Stress is a common risk factor for up to 90% of diseases, including ones that cause high morbidity and mortality. In addition, 83% of US workers say they suffer from daily work-related stress and 72% of them are stressed about money. In the UK, societal pressure, housing, and health issues are the main causes of stress and have a negative impact on over 60% of the population

3️⃣ How you can get involved: You can observe International Stress Awareness Week by adopting effective ways to manage your daily stress, joining community workshops and events, or engaging in workplace seminars:

  1. Strategies for stress relief: Dedicate this week to implementing habits and strategies that can help you combat chronic stress. Identify chronic stressors in your life and find new ways to interact with and react to them. In this way, you are contributing to a longer, healthier life for yourself. 
  2. Get official advice: Find time during this week to participate in public workshops, webinars, and other local events to learn better ways to manage stress and create a calmer, more welcoming community for everybody. 
  3. Combat stress in the workplace: Suggest organizing seminars and trainings for your colleagues and the management team to find ways to cope with common stressors at work. This can also improve your social bonds, thus making you all even more resilient to stress.

A Brief History of International Stress Awareness Week

When was this event established: Stress Awareness Week was created in 2018 in the UK by Carol Spiers, the chairperson of the International Stress Management Association (ISMA), twenty years after she established Stress Awareness Day. She wanted to highlight the physical and mental impacts of stress, as well as what people can do to safeguard their well-being.

How has it developed since then: Stress Awareness Week is tackling a different theme associated with stress every year, such as “Does Hi-Tech Cause Hi-Stress?”, and “Working Together to Build Resilience and Reduce Stress”. In addition, the event trends worldwide on social media, with exposure on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and LinkedIn. Moreover, in 2024, to celebrate their 50th anniversary, ISMA organized the Stress Management Awards during Stress Awareness Week to recognize professionals who have significantly contributed to the fight against stress. 

3 Interesting Facts About International Stress Awareness Week

  1. Mechanics of stress: The body’s response to stress has three stages, part of the General Adaptation Syndrome. The first stage is the Alarm Reaction, our initial response to stress with the fight-or-flight response. Then, there is the Resistance Stage, when the body tries to repair itself after the initial shock of stress. Prolonged or chronic stress leads to the Exhaustion Stage, which drains the physical and psychological resources of the body.
  2. Stress relievers: Long-term stress can be handled with effective stress-relieving habits. For example, physical activity and exercise increase the mood and lower the stress in around 40% of cases. Moreover, spending just 20 minutes connecting with nature can help lower stress hormone levels, while reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. Also, make sure you get high-quality sleep and eat a healthy diet to decrease stress levels. 
  3. Impact on the body: Long-term stress can affect our bodies and health in various ways. For instance, it can make people physically sick, decrease their lifespan, and impact their memory and decision-making processes. Chronic stress can also cause digestive issues, affect the menstrual cycle, and weaken the immune system’s ability to fight infection. In addition, it can boost inflammatory responses like allergies and acne
