Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Lake sturgeon have returned to Big Stone Lake in Minnesota after nearly 80 years of absence, showcasing a successful environmental restoration effort that has already introduced more than 44,000 fish into the ecosystem.
📈 One key stat: More than 44,000 lake sturgeon have been stocked into Big Stone Lake since 2014, with some now reaching 55 inches – approaching the size needed for sexual maturity and potential natural reproduction.
💬 One key quote: “With the abundance of sturgeon we’re seeing out on the lake, we’re very pleased and encouraged by their survival rate,” said BJ Bauer, a fisheries specialist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

1️⃣ The big picture: Lake sturgeon have returned to Big Stone Lake on the Minnesota-South Dakota border for the first time since 1946, marking an environmental comeback decades in the making. These ancient fish, which can grow over 8 feet long and live 150+ years, were once abundant in the area before overharvesting, pollution, and dam construction led to their local extinction. Starting in 2014, wildlife officials began reintroducing sturgeon fingerlings into the newly-cleaned waters, with over 44,000 fish stocked so far. Scientists now track these prehistoric survivors with ultrasonic transmitters to monitor their movements and reproductive capabilities, hoping to establish a self-sustaining population.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The successful reintroduction represents a complete environmental turnaround for a lake that once received raw sewage from surrounding communities. Extensive cleanup efforts since the 1980s transformed Big Stone Lake from highly polluted to healthy enough to support these sensitive ancient fish. Dam removals throughout the Minnesota River system have reconnected vital spawning routes, addressing one of the biggest threats to sturgeon survival. Some fish have already reached impressive sizes approaching sexual maturity, suggesting the population isn’t just surviving but thriving. This restoration mirrors similar success in the Red River basin, where biologists verified natural sturgeon spawning for the first time in over a century.

3️⃣ What’s next: This fall, researchers will place ultrasonic transmitters on about 50 sturgeon to track their movement patterns and potentially identify spawning locations. Blood samples will determine whether any males or females have reached sexual maturity. Additional dam removal projects near Browns Valley will further improve upstream passage, potentially opening new spawning grounds as the fish mature.
