Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: A new biodegradable film made from milk protein, starch, and nanoclay fully breaks down in soil within 13 weeks, offering a promising alternative to single-use plastic food packaging.
📈 One key stat: About 60% of all plastics are single-use, and only 10% get recycled — a stark reminder of why biodegradable alternatives to conventional packaging matter so much.
💬 One key quote: “The entire formulation was designed to use inexpensive ingredients that are biodegradable and environmentally friendly to create a sustainable alternative with enhanced characteristics,” said Nikolay Estiven Gomez Mesa, a chemical engineering researcher at Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano.

1️⃣ The big picture: Plastic pollution continues to accelerate at an alarming pace, with the OECD warning that global plastic production could surge by 70% between 2020 and 2040, hitting over 700 million tonnes annually. Most of that plastic comes from single-use food packaging, and only a tiny fraction ever gets recycled. To tackle this, researchers at Flinders University in Australia, collaborating with scientists in Colombia, developed a thin, flexible packaging film using calcium caseinate — a protein derived from milk — combined with starch and bentonite nanoclay. Published in the journal Polymers, the study found that the film fully breaks down in soil in about 13 weeks. Microbial safety tests also showed bacterial levels within acceptable limits, suggesting the material poses low toxicity risks.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: A packaging film that fully disappears in soil within 13 weeks could dramatically cut the volume of plastic waste entering landfills and natural environments. Built from inexpensive, widely available ingredients like milk protein and starch, the material has real potential for affordable, large-scale production. Because it mimics the performance of conventional plastic, food manufacturers can adopt it without major changes to existing packaging processes. Moving away from single-use plastics also means reducing exposure to the thousands of toxic chemical additives — including dyes and flame retardants — that conventional plastics contain. Scaling up this kind of biodegradable packaging brings us closer to a circular economy where materials return safely to nature rather than accumulating as pollution.

3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers recommend further antibacterial evaluations to better understand the film’s safety profile before any commercial application. Broader testing under different environmental conditions will help confirm how consistently and reliably the material breaks down. Ultimately, integrating this type of biodegradable packaging into mainstream food production supply chains remains the key goal.
