Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: MIT researchers created a sustainable method to produce hydrogen using recycled aluminum and seawater, generating nearly eight times less carbon emissions than traditional methods while producing valuable byproducts.
📈 One key stat: This new aluminum-water process emits only 1.45 kilograms of carbon dioxide per kilogram of hydrogen produced, making it nearly eight times cleaner than conventional hydrogen production methods.
💬 One key quote: “We’re in the ballpark of green hydrogen. This work highlights aluminum’s potential as a clean energy source and offers a scalable pathway for low-emission hydrogen deployment in transportation and remote energy systems,” said Aly Kombargi, a lead author of the study.

1️⃣ The big picture: MIT scientists have developed an innovative method to produce clean hydrogen fuel using recycled aluminum, seawater, and a gallium-indium alloy. This process tackles a major drawback of hydrogen as a climate solution – that conventional production methods still heavily rely on fossil fuels and generate significant carbon emissions. By treating aluminum pellets with a special alloy that removes the oxide layer, researchers enabled a reaction with water that produces hydrogen efficiently. Beyond being environmentally friendly, this approach offers practical advantages like safer transportation of hydrogen (stored as solid aluminum) and valuable byproducts that could make the process economically viable.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: This breakthrough dramatically reduces carbon emissions associated with hydrogen production to just 1.45 kg of CO2 per kg of hydrogen – nearly on par with renewable-powered methods and far better than fossil fuel-based production. The process cleverly repurposes recycled materials like soda cans, giving waste aluminum a second life as clean energy. Seawater can serve as the water source, eliminating the need for freshwater resources in coastal regions. The solid byproduct, boehmite, has commercial value in semiconductors and industrial materials, potentially making the entire process five times more profitable. Since hydrogen is stored in stable aluminum form until needed, this approach eliminates the challenges of transporting and storing explosive hydrogen gas.

3️⃣ What’s next: The MIT team is now working to scale their system for commercial applications in transportation, off-grid power, and marine vehicles. They’re exploring ways to further reduce emissions by using electric or hydrogen-powered trucks for transport and implementing cleaner aluminum smelting methods. Wider adoption could transform scrap aluminum into a valuable energy resource while dramatically cutting carbon emissions.
