Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Moss spores survived nine months of direct exposure to the harsh conditions of space outside the International Space Station, demonstrating remarkable resilience that could inform future off-world agriculture.
📈 One key stat: Over 80% of moss spores remained viable after 283 days in the vacuum of space, with all but 11% germinating successfully when returned to Earth.
💬 One key quote: “We expected almost zero survival, but the result was the opposite: most of the spores survived. We were genuinely astonished by the extraordinary durability of these tiny plant cells,” says lead author Tomomichi Fujita.

1️⃣ The big picture: Scientists have discovered that moss spores can withstand the extreme environment of outer space for extended periods. In a groundbreaking experiment, researchers sent sporophytes from the moss Physcomitrium patens to the International Space Station, where they were exposed to vacuum conditions, temperature fluctuations, and intense radiation for 9 months. This marks the first documented instance of an early land plant surviving long-term direct exposure to space. The moss’s exceptional resilience stems from protective casings around each spore that shield it from radiation and other harmful space conditions. These findings demonstrate that life forms from Earth possess intrinsic mechanisms to endure some of the harshest environments imaginable.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The extraordinary survival rate of moss spores in space opens exciting possibilities for cultivating plants beyond Earth. Mathematical models suggest the spores could potentially survive up to 15 years under similar space conditions. This resilience indicates moss might play a key role in establishing sustainable agricultural systems on the Moon or Mars. The protective mechanisms that helped early mosses transition from water to land millions of years ago now demonstrate potential for helping humans establish life support systems in space. The study highlights nature’s remarkable adaptability and offers practical applications for future space exploration and colonization efforts.

3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers plan to conduct additional experiments with larger sample sizes to refine their predictions about moss survival duration in space. Future work will explore how extraterrestrial soils might support plant growth. Scientists hope to use these findings as a starting point for constructing ecosystems in extraterrestrial environments such as the Moon and Mars.
