Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: MIT engineers developed a new membrane that filters crude oil by molecular size instead of heat, potentially reducing energy consumption in oil refining by 90% and cutting carbon emissions significantly.
📈 One key stat: The new filtration technology could slash energy usage in crude oil separation by approximately 90%, helping reduce the 6% of global CO2 emissions currently generated by traditional oil refining processes.
💬 One key quote: “This is a whole new way of envisioning a separation process. Instead of boiling mixtures to purify them, why not separate components based on shape and size? The key innovation is that the filters we developed can separate very small molecules at an atomistic length scale,” says Zachary P. Smith, an associate professor of chemical engineering at MIT.

1️⃣ The big picture: Engineers at MIT have developed a revolutionary membrane that separates crude oil components by molecular size rather than by heating. Traditional crude oil refining is one of the most energy-intensive industrial processes, responsible for about 6% of global carbon emissions. This new polyimine membrane uses interfacial polymerization – a technique already common in water desalination – to create filters that efficiently separate hydrocarbons without swelling when exposed to oil. The membrane can filter mixtures of naphtha, kerosene, and diesel by capturing molecules according to their size, potentially transforming the entire oil refining industry.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: This technology offers an alternative to the traditional energy-intensive distillation process that has remained largely unchanged for decades. By filtering oil components based on molecular size rather than boiling points, refineries can dramatically reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint. The membrane is produced using manufacturing techniques already established in the water desalination industry, making widespread adoption more feasible. Similar to how reverse osmosis reduced desalination energy by 90% since the 1970s, this innovation could drive comparable efficiency gains in petroleum processing while maintaining the quality of fuel products.

3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers suggest that industrial implementation could involve a series of these filters in a cascade system to generate higher concentrations of desired products at each step. The manufacturing process appears scalable since it uses interfacial polymerization, already widely employed in water purification. Further development will focus on adapting existing production lines to mass-produce these specialized filtering membranes.
